Old Wulfrunians v Boldmere Steelers

It was time for the second XI to show some bouncebackability after the poor performance against Britannic Assurance two weeks ago and, although they made hard work of it, the three points were all that mattered.

After a dodgy first ten minutes, Wulfs gradually gained the ascendancy and after a couple of scorned Chris Tranter chances and a great Ben Kimpton shot onto the post, Jamie Perkins released Luke Oliver down the inside right channel.  He got to the by-line and crossed to the far post where Perkins had continued his run and slotted home.

Wulfs continued to dominate and it was therefore a surprise when Boldmere equalised.  There was a suspicion of offside about the through ball but no mistake was made with the finish.

Wulfs continued to play some excellent football but were taking too many risks at the back with a man-for-man approach.

Just before half time they were made to pay when Tristan Stephens was unfortunate to see a good parry fall straight to an onrushing attacker who gave Boldmere the lead.

Wulfs equalised at the start of the second half.  Rich Winzor took a quick free kick to Adam Shermer who beat the full back and crossed to the near post where Luke Oliver finished neatly.

In keeping with the rest of the game Wulfs proceeded to ship another goal as the Boldmere forward had the freedom of the penalty area to head home.

Wulfs then took the game by the scruff of the neck and after some serious pressure, Luke Oliver headed home a Chris Tranter corner to level the scores yet again.

With both defences struggling there was still time for a winner and it came for Wulfs as Luke Oliver somehow managed to release substitute Craig Thirlaway from the lying position and Thirlaway side-footed into the net to the relief of all concerned.

There was still time for Luke Oliver to miss a chance for his hat-trick and for Tristan Stephens to make an excellent save to preserve the lead.

Entertainment, goals, three points and bouncebackability.

Final score: Old Wulfrunians 4  Boldmere Steelers 3.
