Old Wulfrunians v Welwyn

The spanking that the second XI had threatened to dish out happened today against a mediocre Welwyn team.

Manager Dave Winzor had to reshuffle the pack after late cry-offs, but utility man Jon Hart came to the rescue and played an immaculate game at sweeper and Nick Richards was also impressive at centre half.

In typical Wulfs style they contrived to go a goal behind following Welwyn's first opportunity.  Tristan Stephens called for a through ball and got nowhere near it and the Welwyn forward headed into the empty net.

This sparked the seconds into life and Luke Oliver soon equalised when he got on to the end of a Ben Kimpton cross.

It was Oliver again who gave Wulfs the lead with a great finish into the roof of the net after Chris Tranter had played a through ball to James Lane and he provided a 'deft touch' to put Oliver in.

Ben Kimpton ended his goal drought with a good finish after a defensive error to make it 3 - 1 and it could have been more as Chris Tranter hit the bar with a header and Jamie Perkins fired just over with his legendary left foot.

Wulfs were slow to start the second half and Welwyn had a couple of half chances to get back into the game but any hopes they had were quashed when Adam Shermer slammed home a Stuart Wright cross.

The best goal of the day put Wulfs 5 - 1 up when a corner was half cleared to Ben Kimpton fifteen yards out.  He showed fine technique to volley the ball home.

Welwyn gained a consolation from a hail Mary corner to one of their 7ft players who squeezed the ball in.

There was still time for Chris Tranter to sore with a quickly taken free kick as Wulfs ran out comfortable winners.

Final word must be about James Lane.  Last week he was outstanding scoring two good goals, this week he wasn't!  He tried back heels, flicks, turns and all sorts and none of them came off.  His first touch reminded watchers of a rocking horse and when Winz took him off after seventy-seven minutes, his team mates applauded the decision and Winz has not the best at making substitutions of late …...

Final score: Old Wulfrunians 6  Welwyn 2.
