Old Wulfrunians v Silhill

The third XI were able to gage their recent improvement as they entertained a Silhill side who had beaten them 3 - 0 in the reverse fixture just three weeks earlier.

Wulfs started the better of the two sides and dominated both possession and territory as the forced hard to break the deadlock.

The breakthrough finally came on fifteen minutes.  Simon Stewart continued his recent excellent form by carving through the Sils midfield before releasing Bhupta Patel who finished clinically with just the keeper to beat.

The lead lasted just ten minutes as a lack of concentration in defence allowed Sils in for an undeserved equaliser.

Fortunately, in times of crisis, Wulfs can always rely on the mercurial Gareth Lawton.  Just before the half hour mark it was he who let fly with a shot that took a slight deflection before landing in the onion bag.

Soon after another long range shot caused Silhill problems.  This time it was James Sutton who saw his superb twenty-five yard shot pushed over the crossbar when it looked to be heading for the top corner all the way.

The crucial third goal came two minutes before half time following a major aberration by the Sils keeper.  He appeared to have control of the ball but then dropped it on to the head of Danny Patrick who netted his second goal in successive games.

Two goals were then exchanged in the first twenty minutes of the second half with Wulfs goal netted by Paul Janos after some good build up play.

Unfortunately more poor defending allowed Silhill back into the game as they, once again, reduced the deficit to one goal.

Things got even worse for Wulfs as fifteen minutes from time Paul Janos was cautioned for a foul and then harshly showed a second yellow for back chatting the referee.

The shaky nerves of the Old Wulfs faithful were finally given a rest when Danny Patrick put the game to bed.  Silhill had been g plenty of pressure on the Wulfs rearguard but, with five minutes remaining,  Bhupta Patel caught them on the break and played a good cross field ball into the path of Patrick and he made no mistake with a shot that went in off the inside of the post.

Final score: Old Wulfrunians 5  Silhill 3.
