Malremo Rangers v Old Wulfrunians
The third XI made the difficult trip to face Malremo Rangers, a trip made far more difficult because of the fact that they turned up at the wrong ground, got changed and warmed up before realising they were at the wrong venue. A half-hour drive across the city caused a delayed kick off and the game to be reduced to forty minutes each way.
The late unavailability of a few players from the regular line up meant that frantic phone calls were made on Friday night/Saturday morning and the barrel was well and truly scraped regarding finding players to come in. Things were so bad that they had to field the likes of Nathan Watkins, Darren Sangha, Ashley Postance and Mark Tipton.
Both teams put in good performances in the first half and they were evenly matched. Ashley Postance was having a particularly good game in the centre of midfield, winning some vital headers.
It was Malremo who made the initial breakthrough on thirty-six minutes when a well delivered corner was headed home.
Shortly after the interval Wulfs levelled when Ashley Postance found a spare yard on the edge of the area and decided it would be a good idea to bring his team level with an unstoppable shot.
Wulfs were now in the ascendancy but were slightly interrupted when Phil Gardner picked up an injury and had to be replaced by Mark Tipton.
Wulfs then took a deserved lead after some intricate passing between Postance and Gareth Lawton was only halted then the former was bought down on the edge of the Malremo penalty area. A training ground free kick was employed. After looking as though he was going to shoot for goal, Postance instead played the ball out to Danny Patrick who crossed for the ever-reliable Paul Janos to head home.
Malremo then fought back and created and missed a few chances, the best of which was an open goal that was blazed over the bar.
Manager Dave Griffiths reacted to the change in momentum by bringing on Bhupta Patel and he immediately gave the opposition defence the run around. Indeed hit was he who made the score line 3-1 after firing in another quality goal from just inside the area fifteen minutes from time.
Malremo continued to push forward in the hope of getting something out of the game but it wasn't to be as they ran out of time.
Wulfs avenged an earlier defeat in the reverse fixture and better still put in a good performance for a hastily arranged team. Man of the match was Ashley Postance although he was pushed hard by the returning Darren Sangha.
Final score: Malremo Rangers 1 Old Wulfrunians 3.
