Sutton United v Old Wulfrunians

The third XI travelled to good rivals Sutton United as they set off on the Minor Cup trail.

The game was played in near perfect football conditions on a decent Sutton pitch.  Old Wulfs lost the toss but were determined that would be all they would lose.

A very even first half saw both teams having a couple of half chances but the returning Matt Williams and Gary Griffiths were both being Christmas humbugs and not giving anything away and with Bhupesh Patel and Paul Janos hitting everything but the target 0-0 looked the fair half time score seeing as the Sutton midfield probably shaded most of the play.

A festive team talk was given by Dave Griffiths but Wulfs decided against a Christmas tree formation as Bhupesh wouldn't play the fairy role and Janos had forgot his wand.

We had noticed a very portly, jolly fellow dressed in red and white during the first forty-five minutes but someone said "Ashley, stop laughing at Danny Patrick's gay boots and concentrate on the game"

One bit of advice to Santa Postance by captain Phil Gardner as they all walked on the pitch, "any sight of goal, stick it in".  Sound advice as on fifty minutes Postance wriggled away from a couple defenders and unleashed a Christmas cracker straight into the top corner from twenty-five yards out.

For the next ten minutes Sutton tried to get a leveller and had most of the ball but with Paul Fothergill and Griffiths Jnr stopping most attacks down the left flank and the Simon Stewart, Ashley Postance, Phil Gardner midfield trio holding steady things looked ok.

Sixty-five minutes and the captaincy was handed to Postance as Gardner made way for Pav Khosla but it was Sutton changes that told first as a cross into the box from the right fell into the path of the Sutton forward to mistletoe poke home.

Heads could have dropped at this point being away from home and a decent attendance talking of another Sutton victory.

Pav nearly got his first goal for the club but rattled the post from eighteen yards out with the keeper nowhere.

With five minutes to go and Wulfs looking towards another half hour in the cold with only Griffiths Jnrs girlfriend as an away supporter when a low cross from the left was neatly slotted in by Santa's little helper Bhupesh Patel, 2-1 av it.

The same player could have got a double from two yards out with two minutes to go but being very clever smacked it thirty yards into the field to waste a bit more time (game over).

With the Christmas period bearing down on us, the Sutton lads did things back to front and had the STUFFING before the TURKEY.

Man of the match GARY GRIFFITHS.

Final score: Sutton United 1  Old Wulfrunians 2.
