The fourth XI were determined to keep their winning run going when they faced Erin Go Bragh at the Grammar School on Saturday.
Gary Dimmock justified the fact that the match had been switched to the larger Grammar school pitch (after being offered the chance to play at the club) by the fact that Erin Go Bragh were more mobile than us, liked to knock the ball around and were probably the best team we had played so far this season.
As this obviously makes no sense, it is clearly due to the fact that he prefers the showers at the Grammar School and spends all match dreaming of getting butt naked and lathering himself up.
The game kicked off a few minutes late as the completely inept referee waited for Bragh to do a complete warm-up and training session after arriving late themselves.
Wulfs were pressing Bragh back from the start and were clearly putting the 4-0 drubbing they suffered away to the same opponents earlier in the season firmly behind them.
It took only four minutes for Wulfs to take the lead when Adam Hughes was felled in the box for a less than convincing penalty after a superb move that carved Bragh open. Andy Carey stepped up to confidently slot home for his 100th career goal.
It took Bragh only two minutes to reply however. A bit of confusion at the back allowed Bragh's fifteen year-old forward slotted home from six yards out.
Wulfs were then devastated to lose influential midfield player Nick Ling to a recurrence of the hamstring injury he had suffered the week before. Lingy had indeed been the crucial link in the side and was the driving force behind their three match unbeaten run. He had looked the part early on as well, pinging the ball around the park like a man possessed and crashing into tackles like Roy Keane on Pro-plus. The many fans that had turned out to watch Lingy had to hold the tears back as he limped off, their day ruined by their hero's failure to warm up properly.
The game was obviously not going to be the same after the loss of Lingy and was a close fought affair until half-time with neither team scoring again.
The second half started off the same until Wulfs got another dubious penalty twenty minutes in. Carl Hitchon this time notching from the rebound after his spot-kick was saved.
Bragh equalised from a free-kick and then won it in the last minute.
The referee booked about ten players and was, as my Gran would say, "a useless c**t". Bragh also failed to distinguish themselves and Adam Hughes was head-butted purely for the reason that he was the smallest player on the pitch (width-wise) and therefore the easiest target.
Wulfs were dignified in defeat, but Bragh were by no means dignified in victory.
The highlight of the game, apart from Lingy's cameo, was Marshy being sick at half time due to a heavy night on the tiles the night before.
Final score: Old Wulfrunians 2 Erin Go Bragh 3.
