Boldmere Steelers v Old Wulfrunians

After last weeks spanking by Bustlehome the fifth XI were looking for some bouncebackability against another of the divisions promotion favourites Boldmere Steelers.

With enforced team changes due to missing squad members, manager Chris Jones was forced to put on his boots (not his ice skating ones) and make an appearance, rumour has it that Jane Torvill is playing next week.

Despite the enforced changes Wulfs looked very good for the first fifteen minutes, but found themselves once again falling behind after failing to stop a Boldmere attack.

As the opposition got into the game it became more evident that more goals would follow and that is what duly happened after twenty-five minutes and thirty minutes.

Though it seemed at this stage the fifth XI were taking another spanking, it became evident that there was some belief, and that they could get back into the game.  Wulfs came close towards the end of the half and created numerous chances With Ian 'Wrighty' Phillips going close and also Rich Lovegrove as well as the legend Gordon Brown.

Whilst attempting to make chances, there is always a chance of a counter attack, and this is what brought Boldmere there fourth goal at the end of a very frustrating half.  More Frustrating for Danny Cheal, Joe Caddick, Rob James, Gaz 'Cartman' Hawkswood and Robin Lowbridge in the Wulfs Goal as all four goals were well taken from Boldmere strikers.

Despite being 4 - 0 down, Wulfs started the second half quite brightly with some good play through the midfield with Mike 'Tin Tin' Hill, Chris Nicholls & Chris Jones all involved.

There just seemed to be an extra Boldmere player every time Wulfs Came within eighteen yards of the opposition goal.  If there were any lessons to be learnt from last weeks game, it was not to give up and this is what Wulfs didn't do despite conceding further goals on fifty-five and sixty-five minutes.

With twenty minutes left Wulfs had to change stand-in keeper Robin Lowbridge with midfielder Chris Nicholls after a heavy challenge which left the player limping and unable to help the Wulfs cause outfield.

Despite Wulfs having many chances towards the end of the game, the only two chances Boldmere created were from eighteen yards out, firstly when Gaz 'Cartman' Hawkswood planted a lovely headed back pass over the stranded keeper and onto his own crossbar and the other chance gave them their seventh goal, from a through ball which left striker one-on-one with the keeper.

Despite losing to a strong Boldmere side who have beaten most sides by the same margin so far this season, there were plus points from this game.  If every player involved works this hard every week there be plenty of teams looking over their shoulders.

Ref watch: Another good ref who let the game flow.

Moan of the match: Danny Cheal, yep that lad has a good set of lungs.

Thrill seeker of the week: Chris Nicholls, after walking into a blue nose pub next to County FA Ground last week with an Aston Villa shirt on and forgetting about Blues game that kicked off at 5pm, this week he took up crash test dummy work for MG before getting to the game.

Look-a-like of the week: Mike Hill - Tin Tin.

Funny moment of the match: A Boldmere midfielder taking a corner and kicking the corner flag instead.  DOH!!!

Final score: Boldmere Steelers 7  Old Wulfrunians 0.
